This week has been interesting, if i was to put it nicely if not somewhat ironically. As such, the regularly scheduled movie night didn’t start until about when I’d usually be done with things. This wouldn’t be too relevant - outside of the fact that it lead me to do two things: go straight to the watchlisted items, and then find the shortest one. In turn, a relatively recent add ended up winning on top - one that stars Michael Jai White, who my cousin loves so it’s easy to add to the list. Get ready for one weird movie, as it’s Special Op: Rent-a-Cop.

We start with a man fiiling a kidnapping plight. The mission results in some injuries, so he ends up in the hospital to recover where he meets an attractive doctor lady. Romance is blooming - but there’s one problem - she won’t date a soldier type, especially while they are a soldier type. His easy solution is to get that honorable discharge and retire from the action life, hunkering down and getting married. In typical fashion, this results in some boredom and getting a job as a rent-a-cop, the theoretical only thing he’s got the skills for. Meanwhile, he’s getting tracked down by the hooligans whose kidnapping operation he foiled. Add in a bus load of eccentric old folks on a trip to the casino that he’s now in charge of, and you know shenanigans are going to be afoot.

Acting is alright. I don’t really mean that in a bad way, although I wouldn’t really say the performances often cross the threshold of goofy or borderline cartoonish. Some of it works for the humor of the movie, some of it just has you asking “what am I watching” a good chunk of the movie. Although I personally wouldn’t really call it bad acting generally across the board, there are certainly some lines that don’t have the same quality as others and can feel a bit weak - but for the most part I don’t think actors are the problem as much as it’s what’s intended by the movies design. One would probably expect more action in the movie considering the title, but the normal character shenanigans and interactions will be the bulk of the movie - so I could see the argument be made where people wouldn’t be as happy with the acting department even though I find it fine as stated.

Characters are all quirks. You get some background here or there, like our lead shown doing his mission at the start, or some line drops about how he used to work with one of the bad guys before he was a bad guy or whatnot, but the closest to an arc is the lead learning to appreciate the old folks he’s now working with and being able to loosen up a bit. Beyond that, each old folk has a bit of a quirk - some super obvious, like the far out tarot reading, aura seeing lady who knows number seven is her lucky marriage number, some perhaps a little bit subdued until later like the meditating guy whose first line in the movie is I believe “boobies!” I’d say don’t go for this movie if you are looking for big in depth characters or character moments, even if the movie does have or try to have a variety of wacky people and a moment or two of serious conversation sugar coated by the events going on around it.

The movie is set in modern times, so the attire and settings are all as expected. Great for believability, not exactly the most impressive things to stick around with you forever after wards however. The classic curse of good modern costumes - that said, I do love the main’s leather jacket he wears once. There is also still plenty of color and it’s pretty easy to distinguish between all the players as they are on screen. Settings are relatively varied, if not certainly seeming like buildings that were just dressed up for specific scenes instead of being what they probably actually were. Again, nothing to crazy different, but still good enough for the movie to not feel too stale.

Comedy is subjective, so mileage is always going to vary. I got a couple laughs in here and there, but I also admit that a lot of the humor is pretty dumb-laugh level of jokes. The afore mentioned guy whose first line is “boobies!” works as an example of this, as does the frequent reoccurrence of telling the old folks to do something, like “stay on the bus” only for them to almost immediately do not that. The classic old folks living it up like a bunch of kids, slamming back some drinks or stealing a camper or whatnot, and the “hip talk” of the other worker are typical throughout - so some might find it annoying, some might find it hysterical, some might be somewhere in between. Action isn’t horrible, sometimes played for laughs (like the roadkill nunchuck) but it’s also relatively sparse - you get some at the front, some at the middle, and some at the end basically. The ending one is more played as comedy then actual action, so if all you wanted was action it probably won’t be your favorite choice for a movie.

Audio is balanced well, and there’s a few grooves in there. It can sort of give off a royalty-free kind of vibe, and I don’t recall any of it afterwards, but it’s fun enough and fitting as it’s in the scenes. For the thinking folks, I’d wager most of it is really oriented towards age more than anything else. Appreciating life and those around you is a big one I’d say, but perhaps there’s also something in there about consequences from the fighting kidnapping side of things. We should all know I don’t really think too hard when I watch stuff, so the big adopted wacky old people family of foolery was kind of the biggest thing I was focused on through the run.

It’s an alright movie. Admittedly, I don’t think it’s the kind of movie that’s going to be a win for everyone - I do enjoy it more then the more serious last MJW movie I watched on here, but this one also has a lot more quirks than even something like Don’t Mess with Grandma. It also has the weirdest scene titles that pop up on the bottom of the screen - where things like the location would pop up, even if sometimes it’ll do something like “post debrief” or “a helicopter”. The little location blurb itself isn’t really that weird, but more just the fact that they somehow feel like a powerpoint slide when they pop up in that bottom corner. Still, if that’s the worst thing for me to complain about it’s not in a bad spot. Comedy and the acting attached might be hit or miss for a lot of folks, but overall it is a fun movie.
