Okja (2017)

July 27, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

This isn't the first round of Netflix Present's that I've played over the years. Although I'm not huge on television shows - which doesn't prevent me from watching them, but it usually takes a great effort on my part - and it seems like the large chunk of such on Netflix are television shows, they do occasionally throw out the movies as well. Way be when I watched Spectral I figured out that they could do a pretty good job - even if most of the credit probably goes towards the people behind it as opposed to whose tagged in it and funded it. Regardless of the details, let's see if this movie teaches us how we can be a big pig too.

The Crooked Man (2016)

July 20, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Enough happy movies for a bit, let's get into something more dark and sinister. That's really what I'd like to say, but it's yet to be seen if Crooked Man here will be as frightening as his Freddy Kreuger posturing implies or more akin to the somewhat disinterested looking faces floating in his body. The easiest way to know for sure is to watch, so spine in check and turn off the lights, it's time to try and get spooked.

Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite (2013)

July 13, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

I have a confession to make - this isn't the movie I meant to have for this week. I shouldn't be apologizing, as it's really Netflix DVD fault for labeling this simply as "Lego Batman: The Movie" and making me think I was getting the original Lego Batman movie and actually not. Oh well, a movie is a movie and we got some opinions to get to. I can't tell if this is as good as the first or not, but let's see if it can at least keep the charm of the Lego movies - or perhaps be more akin to stepping on one of the dreaded plastic squares.

47 Ronin (2013)

July 06, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

It's a Japanese story with honor and love and revenge - and Keanu Reeves. I was interested enough when this movie came out out pic up a blu-ray copy - largely because it came in 3D, but also because samurai and stuff. I watched it previously on just the normal bland old DvD format, and since the originally planned movie suffered a bit of a delay in receiving I felt that maybe this would be a good time to check out that third dimension while also plopping up an actual article on this bad boy. Grab those katana and prepare for a face full of mythological beasts, this is 47 Ronin.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

Never stab the devil in the back

Well, did anyone really expect this movie? I mean, sure, John Wick was a hoot and action extravaganza, but it never really cried "I need a sequel!" It pretty well wrapped itself up right then and there. Well, let's buckle our seat belts and grab on to your dog's leash, because who the heck knows what kind of ride we are in for this time around.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again (2016)

June 22, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

For heaven's sake, this title takes longer to say than it feels like some of the songs in this movie last. Props to them for doing a reboot that doesn't just flat-out steal the name of what it's doing (like Robocop or Ghostbusters), but good jeez man. Beyond my thoughts on what a remake I hadn't ever heard anyone express desire in having, this should be an interesting one to review if for no other reason than having already doing the other one and essentially having the same movie on hand. Surely though, something must have been changed outside the cast right? Maybe updating some songs? Maybe new segments or characters or something? Well, guess we'll just have to jump to the left and hope for the best.

Chopping Mall (1986)

June 15, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

It's the four hundredth instance of my weekly movie night since I started having a movie night (roughly about one hundred and fifty times before I decided to put out thoughts on them afterwards here). I had put some thought for a day or two into what I could possibly watch to mark the occasion - full on realizing I've already reviewed a good portion of the better movies or ones I'm more personally attached too. Well, after all that debate I decided to go with something more in line with my particular style of movie necessarily than something that held any sway over me - and for that, we have to introduce to you Chopping Mall. This little B-type will put the B right back in boobs, bots, blood and booms, but can it worm it's B into the beat of your heart?

Sword Master (2016)

June 08, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Been a while since we've dabbled in a martial arts movie hasn't it? Tonight's entry should remedy that pretty well, given the title is Sword Master. You don't get a name like that without being pretty good with a sword - unless I guess everyone else is incapable of so much as holding one and you get it by default. Regardless, the description blurb flat out tells us it's going to be an epic involving not one, but two Hong Kong cinema greats! At this rate, I don't see how it could go wrong - but then again I've thought that of other movies and been beat senseless, so let's see if this can live up to the promise of a sword or drop us a butter knife instead.

He Never Died (2015)

June 01, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

With a name like that, you'd almost expect a Christ-splotation film out of this one. For those of us not really biblical-inclined however, It's probably much appreciated that this one is in fact not. Well, I mean, there's a little bit of bible in it, but it's largely a movie that just so happens to have a little in there, as opposed to something to super heavily focuses on the bible and has a little movie in it it. I mean, that tagline of bullets, blood, bingo really sums up a good part of this one. Still, with that description it's already sounding like a draw, but did this little angel find it's stride or fly too close to the sun?

The Barrens (2012)

May 25, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

We know I like monsters. We've been over this before, unless this is your first landing to this site. Either way, I like monsters, legends, and all that sort of thing, so I couldn't really pass up a movie about the Jersey Devil. It's a bad habit really, considering the number of really cruddy movies based around all the famous cryptids and monsters out there (looking at you Bigfoot). Well, enough putting it off, let's see if this one's a keeper, or just another unfortunate horse-headed excuse of a movie.

Zootopia (2016)

May 18, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

From all the reviews this thing got, it hardly sounds like it needs another put to the mix. Zootopia was, as far as everywhere I saw, pretty much universally agreed on as being a good - if not great - movie. Another ball park hit by the old Disney movie machine. To be honest, it's been on the "to watch" list for quite some time, and I just keep putting it off and putting it off - but tonight, that's no more. Put on your leopard print and gather the family, it's time to hop to it.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

May 11, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

I'm in the "business" or movie review - of course, that's an exaggeration considering I do this as a hobby. There's a good reason I point this out right here - tonight's movie is one that you would normally for sure expect outrage and horror over. Why's that? Well, it's a non-Marvel comic movie of course! Let's see if it can get me all hot and bothered, or if it's another case of people overreacting and making a big deal of nothing.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

I've passed up too many coincidental dates lately I owe everyone this. We'll return to our normally schedule shenanigans - probably with a far worse movie - next week. For now, enjoy the day-pun and a flick we've already covered in the QF format when it was brand new. Light your sabers and miss your targets, let's see how it's held up to repeat viewings.

The Boy and the Beast (2015)

April 27, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

This year I've been trying to do something a little different with the reviews - I guess really in multiple ways in retrospect. One facet of that is trying to alternate between types of movies - a scary movie there, followed by something light hearted, followed by a drama, and so on and so forth. Part of this is because in any good movie, tension should only really be maintained so long before the audience is given some form of relief - whether it be something as lame as a jump scare or as cheesy as a romance scene in an action flick. Well, I may have done a bit of an underestimation on just what this film had to bring to the plate.

The Monster (2016)

April 20, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Enjoyed that happy farting fun of last time? Well, stow it, it's time for monsters! Really, had Monsters not already been used, that would have made a better title for this movie. I'm serious, yeesh. Aside though, after every bright and sunny moment we need to get brought back down to reality by something dark and potentially uncomfortable - keeps us alive, yah know? Tune in this time to learn why you shouldn't take that wooded back road - no matter just how many street lights it might have.

Swiss Army Man (2016)

April 13, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

When I first heard of this movie, I kinda just passed it off as something that sounded like it would be kinda dumb - certainly not something I'd be spending that theater money on. After some time passed though, I hear some reviews about it and how maybe there might be something more too it - like, some depth of symbolism and the likes. Of course, for me, I cared less about that but what the next lines told me - the movie is a veritable treasure trove of fart jokes. Fart jokes being my funny bone's kryptonite, how could I possibly resist that? Tune in, and let us see if this movie is as much of a gas as it's could be.

Train to Busan (2016)

April 06, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Zombie movies, right? Well, this one has been hyped by some people for some time, and I finally got around to seeing if it was all it was cracked up to be. See, I love it when a person I watch - because I have a decent number of movie reviewers on the old YouTube watch list - tells me a good movie to go check out. It's not always that I disagree with something they say so completely that it's a Paranormal Activity situation. That in mind, even though zombie movies have been feeling a little stale, let's check out this one that's been on the back burner for some time now and see if it packs bite.

Moana (2016)

March 30, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

To capitalize on the release of a movie hitting this week, I'm doing nothing related! Instead, we get to have some fun in the sun and surf with a Disney animation named Moana.Songs, princesses, magic and lore are to be expected, but can it hold the interest of some random dude on the internet? You'll have to just decide to read it, because this week, I really need to work harder on Maui puns.

The Martian (2015)

March 23, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Since a crowd-favorite space franchise just launched a new game recently, why don't we get a little more close to home with some local cluster space action? The movie's gotten plenty of high praise form across the board - scientists, readers, movie going critics - so it's seem redundant that I review it. Like a man trapped on Mars doing his best to survive however, I too can be persistent in talking to myself. Grab your potatoes and grow your beard, let's check it out.

Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)

March 16, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Gamera has always sort of felt like the little dorky brother of the generally more popular Godzilla. Between the constant massive inclusion of the "Kenny" character (heck, I think it's what coined the term), the "Friend of all children," and the fact that it's a flying giant turtle with rocket legs, why wouldn't it be? For the most part, I've always sort of found it hard to take seriously - not that I'm really convinced that it was ever meant to be. Still, I never ended up watching any of the later entries, so today I dabbed my feet into the murky waters of the 90's to find out just how well this giant turtle could be treated. I mean, can't be any worse than some of the other mutant turtles out there.
