Poltergeist (2015)

October 26, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

A Reboot is a hard thing to impress with. On the one hand, you can try and just shot-for-shot the original, but at that point why bother remaking it? On the other extreme, you can make it have absolutely nothing to do with the original, alienating a good portion of the people you would bank on spending money to watch it. Really, a reboot is rarely ever a win-win situation. Still, for this final part of 3Dtober, I figure we'll put some fresh eyes on something from before reborn. Will a second viewing with an added dimension allow this to become something more, or does it simply not stand a ghost of a chance.

Coraline (2009)

Big things come in small packages for this entry in 3D-tober. Don't let it's childish looks distract you, for beneath it's charm comes a cautionary tale. The grass is always greener on the other side - but don't question the fertilizer. Be wary of what you wish for, because you might just get it. A different spin on an old concept, will it stitch us in terror, or should we leave the case buttoned up?

House of Wax (1953)

Continuing on with 3D-tober, we travel back funnily enough to a time older then the last, with a headliner more familiar to most - one Vincent Price. There's been many versions of the old wax museum horror, particularly the commonly found lack-luster 2005 take, in which the general consensus I've ever heard form watchers was "at least Paris Hilton dies in it." Surely, the third dimension will be harnessed much the same as the last movie, with it's momentarily highlighted shenanigans - although this time around the selective glasses are changed to a full companion for the duration. Let's strap in and find out if this old timer can compete, or if it needs to practice a little wax on, wax off.

The Mask (1961)

MV5BNDY1NzM2ODM0MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjQyMTY5Mw@@._V1_UY268_CR3,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

We start off with this 3D themed October month of reviews with something old. So old in fact, that not only is it older than me but it also comes from an age when 3D was used as a wonderful gimmick amongst two-colored glasses. Yes, this should be interesting, as this is a movie where in fact only three sections of it are actually in the third dimension - and I see no better way to start it off than with something out of the past to give us a good baseline. Don't mistake it for the one with Jim Carrey, tonight we watch The Mask.

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

With October right around the corner, I thought it might be a good time to get our feet wet in some more horror thriller fun. Of course, that's a little deceiving, as my slated queue for the next month cycles back and forth between serious and comedy as opposed to going full-blown tracked terror. Either way, this one actually fits a bit into both categories - it has your tense murderous super-sharks, and it has your jokey master chef L.L. Cool J. Throw on your wetsuits, it's time to play with nature.

Absolutely Anything (2015)

From watching a trailer when I first found out about this movie, I got the general gist that it was going to be something along the lines of Bruce Almighty, except with aliens instead of god. I enjoyed that movie just fine, so I figured that surely something similar with both Simon Pegg and the voice of Robin Williams in it couldn't be any worse off. Besides that, it's also fun to respond to "what are you watching" with Absolutely Anything, so make sure to drink something at your own caution while the movie is in motion and find out what it's like to have supreme power.

Alien: Covenant (2017)

September 14, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BNzI5MzM3MzkxNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTkyMjI4MTI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

I was pretty excited about the predecessor of this movie coming out, and am totally open about not finding it the best movie ever. I'm pretty sure I probably enjoyed it more than a lot of other fans of the franchise out there, and largely most of my complaints were more of a breakdown of immersion from differing technologies resulting in it tying into the franchise as preposterous more so than any specific lack of certain creatures during it's runtime. All of that in tow, I passed on Covenant when it was in theaters because I did not think it would end up making me feel good about spending that ten-and-over dollar price tag for a followup to a movie I wasn't that impressed with. Instead, for tonight, we get it in the DVD queue, so partner up with your stupid scientists and marvel at the corporations continual iteration on androids despite not making them look different - this one could be an express elevator, going down.

Wonder Woman (2017)

September 07, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Heralded as the best female-led female-directed movie to ever exist! I mean, I'm not gonna fall for such big yellow font when the masses start saying that sort of thing - although it is nice to know before watching a movie that everyone likes it (as is the case for pretty much anyone late to the Marvel movie releases I'm sure). However, I've spent years dabbling all over the place - knowing full well that a lot of horror films actually have women behind the scenes and in the lead hero spot, so I could care less if it's a woman or a robotic alien pickle in the lead roll, the thing will get judged based on my enjoyment. With that truth lassoed about, let's see how the lovely Gal follows up on that sweet theme song in that other DC movie.

Phantasm (1979)

At first, with a name like phantasm, you'd think I was showing yet another dang ghost movie. Well I got you good! This old little gem has two things that really managed to become iconic - a silver ball and a tall dude - but was strong enough in following that it had a number of sequels. Tonight, we strap into our nice looking car and look both ways for a stalker of a younger sibling, it's time to take a look at Phantasm.

Power Rangers (2017)

There was a lot of memorable theme songs to old television shows. Still is, for better or worse. I'd wager you'd be rather hard pressed to find one as straight energy-pumping awesome as that old power rangers theme though - so straight high octane. As with most things, this new take on Power Rangers was anxiously met by people with an almost per-disposition to want it to fail, because it was just another "cash in" on nostalgia. Heck, even after release it was met by a new wave of dislike and negative reviews quite common to these sorts of things. Me though, I like to judge a movie by my own opinion - and as at this point I've almost empirically proven that most the time I'll enjoy a movie far more than the common-folk negative review would imply I should. Get out that spandex, it's morphing time!

Ghosts of Darkness (2017)

August 17, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

A ghost movie! I don't think I really need to elaborate much beyond that for us to temper our expectations before going into this one. I expect multiple ghosts (given the title), and according to the box blurb a haunted house - not of the carnival variety - and conflicting ghost hunters. I don't recall hearing of it largely, so I'm not expecting blockbuster grade effects or anything of that sort - but then again, I still imagine the little ghosts that could should be able to pull off better than Asylum grade. Grab those vacuum cleaners, it's time to scope out this haunted mansion.

Enter The Warriors Gate (2016)

The original planned movie didn't arrive on time due to a mishap in sending it out on time. Instead, I found another movie - yet again something easily available on Netflix at the time of writing this. This one holds all sorts of surprises I didn't anticipate because I didn't read anything beyond the title and box-blurb equivalent. I mean, sure, there's tons of these "gamer gets pulled into a situation that makes things real" movies out there, but that doesn't stop most of them from at the least being cheesy fun. So, tune your set to dairy and let's see if it gives us what we anticipate.

Sicario (2015)

I've been playing a decent amount of that newer Ghost Recon game, and it may have influenced my choice of movie for the week. See, that game is all about taking down cartels, which is a similar pitch I've heard for Sicario. A buddy of mine actually reviewed it a while back and that also told me that it should be pretty good to boot. So, having my safety net of "This should be good" cast out in expectations, let's see if this movie can live up to it.

Okja (2017)

July 27, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

This isn't the first round of Netflix Present's that I've played over the years. Although I'm not huge on television shows - which doesn't prevent me from watching them, but it usually takes a great effort on my part - and it seems like the large chunk of such on Netflix are television shows, they do occasionally throw out the movies as well. Way be when I watched Spectral I figured out that they could do a pretty good job - even if most of the credit probably goes towards the people behind it as opposed to whose tagged in it and funded it. Regardless of the details, let's see if this movie teaches us how we can be a big pig too.

The Crooked Man (2016)

July 20, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Enough happy movies for a bit, let's get into something more dark and sinister. That's really what I'd like to say, but it's yet to be seen if Crooked Man here will be as frightening as his Freddy Kreuger posturing implies or more akin to the somewhat disinterested looking faces floating in his body. The easiest way to know for sure is to watch, so spine in check and turn off the lights, it's time to try and get spooked.

Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite (2013)

July 13, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

I have a confession to make - this isn't the movie I meant to have for this week. I shouldn't be apologizing, as it's really Netflix DVD fault for labeling this simply as "Lego Batman: The Movie" and making me think I was getting the original Lego Batman movie and actually not. Oh well, a movie is a movie and we got some opinions to get to. I can't tell if this is as good as the first or not, but let's see if it can at least keep the charm of the Lego movies - or perhaps be more akin to stepping on one of the dreaded plastic squares.

47 Ronin (2013)

MV5BMTc0MjE2NzE0OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTU5MjE1MDE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

It's a Japanese story with honor and love and revenge - and Keanu Reeves. I was interested enough when this movie came out out pic up a blu-ray copy - largely because it came in 3D, but also because samurai and stuff. I watched it previously on just the normal bland old DvD format, and since the originally planned movie suffered a bit of a delay in receiving I felt that maybe this would be a good time to check out that third dimension while also plopping up an actual article on this bad boy. Grab those katana and prepare for a face full of mythological beasts, this is 47 Ronin.

Never stab the devil in the back

Well, did anyone really expect this movie? I mean, sure, John Wick was a hoot and action extravaganza, but it never really cried "I need a sequel!" It pretty well wrapped itself up right then and there. Well, let's buckle our seat belts and grab on to your dog's leash, because who the heck knows what kind of ride we are in for this time around.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again (2016)

June 22, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

For heaven's sake, this title takes longer to say than it feels like some of the songs in this movie last. Props to them for doing a reboot that doesn't just flat-out steal the name of what it's doing (like Robocop or Ghostbusters), but good jeez man. Beyond my thoughts on what a remake I hadn't ever heard anyone express desire in having, this should be an interesting one to review if for no other reason than having already doing the other one and essentially having the same movie on hand. Surely though, something must have been changed outside the cast right? Maybe updating some songs? Maybe new segments or characters or something? Well, guess we'll just have to jump to the left and hope for the best.

Chopping Mall (1986)

June 15, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

It's the four hundredth instance of my weekly movie night since I started having a movie night (roughly about one hundred and fifty times before I decided to put out thoughts on them afterwards here). I had put some thought for a day or two into what I could possibly watch to mark the occasion - full on realizing I've already reviewed a good portion of the better movies or ones I'm more personally attached too. Well, after all that debate I decided to go with something more in line with my particular style of movie necessarily than something that held any sway over me - and for that, we have to introduce to you Chopping Mall. This little B-type will put the B right back in boobs, bots, blood and booms, but can it worm it's B into the beat of your heart?
