Paranormal Activity Franchise (2007 - 2015)

I couldn’t stomach doing these as individual entries. If you’ve listened to any of the Watch-Alongs I’ve done of three of these things, you’d also be fully aware that my overall opinion of the franchise is negative. Still, perhaps it’s about time I gave the franchise an acknowledgment since it seems to be popular enough that it keeps getting more - so maybe, just maybe, we can consider this a learning experience, because there are certainly some things I wouldn’t mind talking about. Tonight, we talk about the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

This one came recommended from a coworker and a podcast that I watch. Probably a bunch of other people would recommend it too, seems like one of those kind of movies where it’d get a good reception. It’s also not entirely out of my field book either - I’ve enjoyed other humorous romps involving some form of Hitler before - such as The Producers. Still, let’s satiate that wanting to know and just get right down to it, tonight’s movie is JoJo Rabbit.

Knives Out (2019)

Is there any way tonight’s movie can possibly live up to the hype? I mean, it’s not that everyone has been saying raving things about it or something like that - more just I’ve wanted to see it since I saw a trailer in the theaters, and that’s a pretty lengthy amount of time after numerous thwartings in the mail-roulette. The trailer tells me to expect some good fun like in Clue, and the cast tells me it should be pretty good acting - but will the mystery hold up? Will there be surprises and fun? I guess there’s only one way to tell - it’s time for Knives Out.

Color Out of Space (2019)

Next week is a hopeful main course that’s been waited for for weeks - this week is a movie that was going to be last week’s movie but I wanted to not bundle up the genres too much. Cosmic horror. The very terror that is indescribable, assaulting the mind and driving any attempt at describing it to sheer madness. Yeah, movies don’t always fair the best when it comes to capturing the very things that escape description - but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had any good entries. Lovecraftian movies are abound if you look about for them - and I’ll admit that it’s a gamut of good and bad - but tonight’s movie has a secret weapon - Nicolas Cage. It’s not all dark and lifeless out there, tonight we check out Color Out of Space.

Mr. Right (2015)

As seems to be the norm, the queue has forsaken sending me available movies in order, and instead continues it’s chaotic grab-bag or mockery. Since that’s the case, the movie that came in the mail this week will be getting pushed - I had thing orders to bring a nice amount of mixing and matching of moods as opposed to my normal run of horror, horror, horror, action, garbage, family friendly lopsided stacking. Tonight, I retreat to the realms of digital viewings and we get to watch a movie that’s a comedy with some action and romance! Yeah, partially out of my normal league, but hey, you’re welcome people who aren’t into the normal buffet selections. This movies about a strange pairing, tonight we look to find if he’s actually Mr. Right.

Hugo (2011)

So this is going to be a bit different, as it’s a bit of a joint review. See, VR users have had access to a program called Bigscreen for a while - formerly Bigscreen Beta, currently Bigscreen VR I believe. As you might guess from the name, it’s got a bit of a movie theater vibe to it - and at some point they managed to get a deal with Paramount that allows them to sell tickets to digital showings - so, for example, you pay 5 bucks for a ticket, and then get to go watch tonight’s movie for example. I figured that it’s time to get into it a bit, because one of the big punchilnes of it is 3D showings - and my little eyes tend to get more from 3D when in VR for some odd reason, and tonight’s movie is said to have some good 3D effects, so it all just sort of aligns. Get yourselves all cranked up, it’s time to go check out Hugo.

Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985)

Alright, so I get some pretty weird reasons that I watch specific movies sometimes - I think we can all agree on that. I was a little disappointed when what I had hoped would show up in the mail didn’t earlier this week, but that’s okay. I’m working - yeah, I’m one of those lucky jack-wagon’s that’s still reporting to duty on a daily basis to grind those gears at their day job whilst the rest of the population seems to lose it’s mind - and that St. Elmo’s fire song comes on my listening device, and as I’m listening to it all of a sudden I have some flashback action. Straight up thrown back in time and remembering that good old Chuck Norris movie The Delta Force - because one way or another, that theme is in the song or inspired from the song unless it’s one of those fortuitous events of spontaneous simultaneous creations. Either way, it got the movie stuck in my head - and then I find out that I either misplaced my DVD copies of Delta Force or don’t own them (preposterous!) - so I figured I’d do Missing in Action instead, but realized I already have. Tonight, we get to check out the sequel prequel to Missing in Action because it’s part of the three-pack I own, it’s time for The Beginning.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

Much like the fabled It coming around every 27 years - or whatever it is, I honestly don’t remember - it seems other Stephen King works also like to come back from nowhere to carry onward with trying to terrorize the minds of all. As we still wait for the murder-comedy that I keep expecting to show up at some time, we instead get another spooky treat to watch - or at least something most would assume would be meant to thrill and spook, considering it comes from the mind of King. I’ll be honest here - I don’t think I’ve once watched a Steven King based movie and actually got frightened by it - it’s more horrifying looking at the general public’s reception reflected as ratings then what’s happening in the movies. That said, I do enjoy many a King flick - and that Jack in Shinning was a darn classic slow burn mind humper as quotable as the bar is stocked. Fast forward many years and get your shine on, tonight we check out Doctor Sleep.

The world has gone insane. People are buying toilet paper like an episode of Supernatural is their bible. Governments are telling people to get some personal space and chill out. Cats and dogs are getting along. Amidst all the chaos, Netflix pulls the absolute best punchline from my queue to send to me, matching ironically the world’s seeming descent into absurdity. Tonight, we find out if the last laugh truthfully belongs to the Joker.

A certain bloody vampire show is back for another season on Netflix on the day of writing this, so I decided I’d celebrate with a family movie! Ha, just kidding, I decided to do a bloody vampire movie! I know, I know, I’m so unpredictable aren’t I? You know, people always complain that comic movies didn’t get good till the modern marvel flicks, but there was actually quite a few enjoyable ones out there before those days - and this is one that I frequently forget had anything to do with comics until the opening titles throws it up on there. Get your low-light filters on and stay out of Alaska, tonight we watch 30 Days of Night.

From an actor I haven’t seen in a long time to an actor I see all the time - even if it’s not because of a new release. Even though a lot of the time it is. In fact, the cast of this one is more advanced then I even imagined at first - with a metric ton of faces you’ll recognize, probably. Almost as many recognizable faces as there are badges, but that perhaps should be expected. Tonight, we go across the bridge and check out Cop Land.

Although something else was planned for this week, I didn’t move quick enough to get it so we get what I like to think of as “grab bag movie night” - in which case i take all the movies on Netflix and just random pick the first one with a picture that grabs my attention. In the spirit of rental store logic, tonight grants us the potential beyond this world movie with someone whose name I remember - and only some one. Been a while since I’ve caught some Wesley Snipes in a movie - let’s hope the name of this one isn’t prophetic or we are in for a bumpy road - tonight we check out The Recall.

It’s time for some action! Excitement! Saving the president! In another entry of the storied history of doing a watching of a movie that I have no written record of it’s predecessors, tonight we get to visit a franchise that really just shows off how dangerous it is not just to be the President, but one of (specifically his best) Secret Service man. Rurouni Kenshin Part I: Origins (2012)

I like swords. I like sword fights. Sometimes I get bored, and when I do inevitably I’ll end up going to something like YouTube and searching something along the lines of “best sword fights.” Honestly, it’s happened many a time - and a lot of times I’ll learn of something new, but mostly a lot of things I’ve already seen or knew of. One of the things that turns up a lot in those videos isn’t specifically the movie we are watching tonight, but more it’s sequel - but despite having watched the anime back when a young me was just as enthusiastic about most of Cartoon Network’s line up like Dragon Ball Z or Gundam, I still thought there’s no point to skipping around despite the fact it could set me back even further to eventually watch the thing I intended. Tonight, we get to avoid listening to me butcher Japanese names and words, it’s Rurouni Kenshin Part 1.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Breakpoint has released it’s long awaited (seriously, it’s been delayed at least once) Terminator themed event, so I thought I’d bring us back around form all the monsters and stuff into something everyone loves. Yeah, some will say the first is better, some will say the second is better, most will say everything after that is trash (or mediocre at best). Tonight though, we’ll come into the action packed sequel to the original (that just so happens to my understanding be the jump-off point for the most recent sequel): tonight, it’s Judgement Day.

Monster movie! Well, more like nature’s monster movie! Jaws made you want to stay out of the pool, and now Gators want you to stay out of their state! Upon knowing of this movie’s existence it got added to the queue - there is nothing about this concept that doesn’t strike me as a me kind of movie. I’m not saying that their couldn’t be bumps - low cast, high potential for bad effects, not really using it’s premise to the max - but we’ll see if the scales tip in the movies favor, tonight we check out Crawl.

Two comic movies in a row? Just as little know-how of both! Although I enjoyed the last entry, not as many seemed to agree with that conclusion. This time around, we go after something that looked like a nice humorous superhero romp with plenty of potential towards color and fun that didn’t get nearly as bad reviews! Yeah, don’t get to used to it - this hasn’t become the year of the superhero, it’s just your luck of the roulette draw while I’m too distracted with hunting big old monsters and turning their skin into coats - tonight we check out Shazam!

The new expansion to Monster Hunter: World comes out today for us PC-using folks, and I’m a little psyched up about it, so I reorganized the movie queue a bit for something more mood-suitable. What’s better prep than a movie about a monster of a (part) man doing battle with various monsters (including giants)? I also enjoyed the old Hellboy takes, so I figure despite loosing what those are it should still be an interesting thing to check out anyways - especially if it actually goes somewhere else with it to make itself feel like something worth having stand on it’s own two legs. Shave your horns and buff those revolvers, tonight we check out the 2019 version of Hellboy.

I saw this movie while bingeing through the selections of movies available on VUDU last year, and it’s sat in the back of my mind since. As the new year approached, they had a sale - and for five dollars, I think I could chance it not being great so I grabbed it. So I watched the trailer and it tempered my expectations to what I hope is a suitable level, let’s see if the movie starts of the year on a good foot or not. Tonight, we slay some monsters in The Head Hunter.
