The Fifth Element (1997)

January 01, 2015  /  Ken Rupracht

I watch this movie at least once a year, it's in my favored circulation. There's many a reason for this that we can get to later one, just as there are reasons that it's not the perfect movie by definition - although I think we could all argue that the perfect movie in reality isn't the flawless one, but the one that we can overlook all it's shortcomings because it's just that much fun. Can this Captain Planet of movies prove elemental to having fun, or will it just be that other sci fi flick with the cast of people you know from other movies?

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)

December 25, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Get in the Christmas spirit with a tale about Martians finding what it means to have the Christmas spirit! Most will remember this one from MST3K well before they remember it by itself I would wager, but it's at least certainly something different from the normal stable of television-run Christmas flicks. Different is good, right? He may conquer the martians, but find out if good ole Santy Clause can conquer your heart too.

Batman Returns (1992)

December 18, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Nananananananana Nananananananana Batman! Before I continue with my pre-spiel here, might I reflect to you how crazy it is that we live in a time when auto-correct on PC's will actually properly relocate the spaces necessary for the old Adam West Batman theme? Seriously, I guess I know I at least had the right number of nana's in there, ha! Anyways, in a long running tradition of watching non-Christmas Christmas movies, I bring to you another flick that fits the bill, featuring everyones favorite superhero - Batman! Before he got super serious and swallowed a truck full of gravel, before it was decided that nipples needed to be placed on all the male suits, but after the televised version that contained onomatopoeia, there was the Michael Keaton run of Batmans. In this sequel to his first foray as the dark knight, can he triumphantly return to the top of your interests, or will it be the movie you deserve but not want?

This Is the End (2013)

December 11, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

I'm gonna be honest here - I don't generally watch this kind of movie, because it's normally not my cup of humor. That being said, this one looked like it would make fun of all the right stuff, so it had to at least merit a few chuckles right? The thing I didn't take into account is that a movie such as this might not have a huge heavy duty plot line, meaning I may not be able to milk three paragraphs out of it - so it probably would have been a safer bet to do a Quick Flick on it instead - but alas, it is in fact the weekly movie, and you are probably wishing this preamble would come to an end. Does the movie end my worries, or does it end the patience of the movie watcher instead?

City Hunter (1993)

December 04, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Jackie Chan! Yeah! I know there's folks out there (due to pure statistical probabilities alone) that balk at the idea of watching Jackie Chan movies, but I like the guy. Sure, some movies are cooler than others, and some of them haven't been available till long after the fact here (which has lead to a bit of misleading time-frames in titles), but I've generally not had him in a movie that I regretted watching. Hadn't heard of City Hunter before, so I thought it would be a good chance to check it out, you know? Hopefully it delivers a city-worth of enjoyment and doesn't leave me hunting for my alarm clock.

Legend of the Millennium Dragon (2011)

November 27, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

I like anime. It doesn't always crop up in movies though, as I feel the vast majority of it is actually pretty well serial based as opposed to movie based. That being said, with a title like Legend of the Millennium Dragon, I couldn't resist. Dragons, and legends? How could it go wrong? Well, we'll just need to find out if its a legendary experience or just one of those movies that drag on

Lone Survivor (2013)

November 20, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Well, the name is kind of a spoiler in it's own right, but it's been a while since a military style flick has shown up in my queue of viewing. Considering it's 'based on a true story' tag, what's going to happen here is a good deal of authenticity with some bad events over in the heated world of Taliban-filled territory. It's certainly a familiar war story to those who like the genre, but it never claims to be anything more than what it is. Will this band of brothers be cause to add to the collection, or would you rather leave the rifle on the shelf?

Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

November 13, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Muppets go way back with plenty of the young adult to semi-adult audience, and at the very least are a generally recognizable by name. I'm sure some younger audience members may have been introduced by their parents, possibly their friends, and I'm not even going to wager on the actual audience distribution as far as gender and age as a whole. That being said, it's obviously going to be a family-friendly movie - as I don't think a Muppet movie has ever not been - with at least one number of song and dance in it. Normally these aren't my things, but ever now and then I like to diversify my viewing experience, but the real question is whether or not this was something that makes me want to add it to the wanted list, or send it to a Siberian prison and hope I never see it again.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

November 06, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Yeah, sure, the newest Call of Duty has exo-suits and laser guns - but Edge of tomorrow teased delicious mechanically enhanced soldiers before I remember them doing it - and I'd be willing to put my money down on EoT not being as derivative as well. Been a while since Tom Cruise was out there in a sci fi flick eh? Not really, but I kind of feel that's generally what he does well anyways, so that's not holding me back either. Will you end up repeating your viewing experience, or will you just live on like nothing happened?

The Exorcist (1973)

October 30, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

If you happen to be like me, you've probably heard of The Exorcist for years as it's landed on top 10 lists and genre-definer lists and the likes. Well, if you are also like me, you won't ever get around seeing it until 20 some-odd years after you start hearing about it - but never mind that, it's here now and it was watched. Not just any version though, we went nuts with the Extended Directors cut version, clocking in at roughly two hours. Seems short by today's standards, but let's get into seeing if this movie could live up to the enormous amount of hype built up by the years of time taken to watch it. Will we exercise by running in fear, or will we instead try to banish the ghost of the film from our mind?

Pet Sematary (1989)

October 23, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Stephen King, the literary master of horror. Although I have been told that King's books are quite the reads, I've never really been big into the horror-book scene (which could be strange considering my penchant for VHD and Predator novels) and to this day have never actually gotten around to reading any - I've been more than content with the film adaptations. I say adaptations lightly, because I know there's those hardcore reader fans who would tell me that these things are barely half-hearted attempts at creating something that was amazing on page - which I do suppose must be true to some extent, as the track record of "Stephen King" movies (most of which he isn't really associated with, outside of Maximum Overdrive, as far as I can tell) isn't exactly spurring one to believe he's any more a master of the dark ends of human psychology than a saturday morning cartoon. Well, let's put a literary twist on cemetery and see if this flick can be brought back from the grave, or if it should have just been left there.

Predator (1987)

Some folks just don't got time to bleed. Some creatures couldn't win a beauty contest if all the competition dropped out. Every now and then you run into a movie that sparks something in you that can cause a lifetime of wonder and interest. Predator may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me it was one such movie - this little alien on a safari movie has drawn me into countless books, comics, movies, and games for years to come. You could say I'm a bit of a fan - but that won't get in the way much for the movie review itself. Can one liners flex their bulging biceps, or is this trophy nothing but a fake coat of gold?

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

October 16, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

The title scroll did more for my interesting in this movie than most title scrolls can claim to try and do. Sam Neill from Jurassic Park (and numerous other things), combined with one of my usually-enjoyed directors John Carpenter, all wrapped in a rolling rock song? Call my interest spiked, right? That being said, I hear before hand that this is one of the best Lovecraftian movies around, and although I'm not a huge Lovecraft fan myself, I know enough about it (him) from hearsay to figure it could make for a great movie if it comes off well done. So then, let's find out if it's gonna make you lose your mind or mouth your distaste.

The Uninvited (1944)

October 09, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Get ready to travel into cinema's past again with me! Come now, it's a fantastic journey to a time when color was shades of black and white, the over-use of all things CG was unimaginable, movie posters were still something of an art. Not to lose out on the October-ly spirit however, this haunting journey back is a bit of a ghost tale. Do you believe in haunted houses, or won't you give them the ghost of a chance?

Oculus (2013)

October 02, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Immerse yourself in the depths of VR! No, that's the wrong Oculus. Check out this eyeball shaped opening! Nope, still the wrong Oculus. Check out this spooky haunted item movie with shiny eyed ghosts who can make you see things! Yeah, now thats the Oculus! Will you come out of this one not believing your eyes, or wishing that you saw something else?

Flash Gordon (1980)

September 25, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

I'm sure most peoples introduction to Flash Gordon was it getting mentioned in Ted - unless maybe your a member of the older audience (not like I know the ages of anyone reading this). I mean, just looking at that cover and knowing it's from the 80's (the "remastered edition" for my viewing) tells me everything I need to want to watch it. Why it's taken me so long is anyones guess, but can it live up to my expectations? Well, it's got a title theme done by the one and only Queen, so it's already starting off on a good foot. Can Gordon save us all, or will this movie be but a flash in our memory?

Jennifer's Body (2009)

September 18, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

People tell me that Megan Fox is a bad actress, that she's nothing but a pretty face. I honestly don't think she's that bad - I mean, surely no Kurt Russel, but leagues better than Kristen Stewart for sure - but the real test of how good an actor is would be in the breadth of roles they can play. That being said, I've been on a horror movie kick again recently, so tie in seeing how well she can do as a bad guy and the fact that (from the trailers) it's a sex-based monster while not actually having a lot of nude shots and you can color me interested. Granted, the questions always remains as to if the movie's goodness will be all my imagination, or if it's for a good time we should call.

Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie (2014)

September 11, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

He's the angriest gamer you'll ever know. Youtube browsers may already know who I refer to, and other internet users may have stumbled across the Cinemassacre site a long time ago already, but for those who aren't aware I'm talking about the Angry Video Game Nerd (or AVGN). A long time coming, this movie is a labor of love for the Nerd himself, and hopes to be everything budget-film awesome a lot of the B-flicks he enjoys would love to be (all while fitting into a similar format for the character of the Nerd). I should warn you now: language is a strong thing in the movie (and the reviews), so if you're easily offended by strong words you should probably skip it. That being said, is the movie really an out-of-this-world experience, or would you rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in your ear (I don't expect all of you to get that)?

The Monuments Men (2014)

September 04, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

Find yourself with a hankering for a world war 2 flick that's less depressing and war-like? Maybe wish Ocean's Eleven had a smaller cast and was set back in world war 2? Ever feel the burning desire to watch some people thwart Hitler by saving art? Well, today might be your lucky day, as this is exactly what Monuments Men promises! Now all we need to do is figure out we celebrate over the survival of art, or if we rather wish the german guy shot us (I promise you'll get that later).

The Ice Pirates (1984)

August 28, 2014  /  Ken Rupracht

You know what modern films haven't always done a good job of doing? Parody films. Yeah, we get the occasional one (like Shaun of the Dead) that's phenomenal, but compared to back in the day when Mel Brooks was constantly pumping out quotable riot after riot, it's hard not to miss the glory days. Speaking of the glory days, tonights entry comes right from that sweet spot back in the 1980's, named Ice Pirates.  It promises rollicking good fun, space herpie, and even ferocious space possums. Can it truly be a riveting adventure on the rocks, or will it leave us floating in our own disappointment?
