The Beaver (2011)

July 14, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

I'm drawn to movies with strange premises. If you've been around and seen the selection of my other opinion pieces, you've probably already come to this conclusion. It's to my credit that most of these movie are at-a-glance drawings either by word-of-mouth or a simple picture, maybe even a trailer. I normally don't know much about a movie, for better or worse, until after I get around to seeing it. Mel Gibson talking to himself and others through a beaver puppet is one such premise, and the answer to better or worse awaits being logged.

Immortal (Ad Vitam) (2004)

July 07, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

I'd just like to go on the record and say I didn't do any research on this before watching it besides "will I need subtitles? No? Cool." I mean, science fiction! Something something Horus something something future something babies. I could make a comment here about it, but i think I'll make you read through it first to get to that comment.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

June 30, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Did you enjoy that found footage giant-monster/alien thing movie Cloverfield? You did? Oh, wait, you said you didn't? Well, I'm not gonna call you crazy, because I can find reasons to not like it just as I can find reasons to enjoy it, but regardless I was pretty shocked to hear that there was a pseudo-sequel coming out when I heard the news. I mean, sure, I enjoyed the first, but most people seemed to be distinctly in the "nah, pass" crowd. Either way, color me interested and off we go to the prepper dream of 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

June 23, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Mission Impossible. Shouldn't really need to say much more than that to really let a person know if they want to watch this or not - either you like the usually tech-filled spy fun or you don't. Stunts, fights, and subterfuge await, but will it be fun?

Gods of Egypt (2016)

June 16, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

The fabled disastrous heap of a movie of 2016. A film that nearly every single internet critic unanimously said was a giant steaming pile - so much so that the enraged man behind it told them they wouldn't know a good movie if it hit them in the face (paraphrasing on both accounts, of course). A movie that I haven't been so excited to be able to sit down and watch in a very, very long time. I mean, this movie was absolutely rife with terrible all over it, and if there's one thing I can get behind it's a bad movie. There's only one problem though - the movie's trailer actually looked pretty entertaining to me. So were they right, or was my gut feeling based on the trailer the winner of this joust?

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

June 09, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

I watched so much G.I.Joe as a kid that I even did one of those mail-in "Get yourself as a character" toy deals from breakfast cereals (or wherever it was). Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if I one day came across that double family-size box full of the little brigands. When they put out the first, I already had seen enough movie adaptations of things to know to set my expectations to mediocre at best - and when all I asked for was a cool ninja fight between Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, they tripled down on my expectations. So then they make a sequel, and I set my expectations at the same levels as before - could this sequel live up to terms of engagement, or will it have to slither away in shame?

Godzilla (2014)

June 02, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Return visitors will know that Godzilla's my jam. I love Godzilla - well, except maybe that terrible American one with Broderick in it, which is more based of off the fact that it isn't Godzilla more-so than it being a movie of contestable quality. I've got a whole slew of them under my belt - missing only a few in the original era from my viewing repertoire. I relish the fact that it's a crappy suit with a zipper hanging out, or a giant ferret-headed lizard of rage, or even the equivalent of a giant radioactive superhero that can regrettably talk to his monster-pals and has a hideous looking little stay-puft lizard of akid. You may have even read the Quick Flick rendition of this when it came out and I had seen it for the first time. Either way, lets carry on to the meat and potatoes shall we?

Cooties (2014)

May 26, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

It's rare that I find a movie that I feel somewhat bad about liking. I mean, at worst it should be a mediocre kids-are-zombies movie, and that should be amusement enough right? Then the trailer shows you all these jokes and you can't help get that Will Farrel movie vibe from it. Well, the best way to find out just how much you like something is to push on through it, so boot up that disc drive and let's take it for a spin.

Howl (2015)

May 19, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Why wouldn't I watch a movie that lays the seeds for me to imagine Under Siege (the train one) combined with werewolves? I mean, don't get me wrong. I don't expect Seagal to pop out and get into any gunfights in a movie that's pitched strictly as horror, but trains seem like a logical enough spot to bolster up the dangers of a werewolf. Heck, there's been other movies that have worked quite well on trains, so I wondered if this one would pull up to the station or I'd find it's caboose lagging behind schedule.

Seventh Son (2014)

May 12, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Good old swords and sorcery. Yeah, it's unfortunately one of those genres - like hard science fiction - that never seems to do awesome in theaters (with the exception of the Tolkien mega-hits collection). I won't deny some of that comes down to mind-boggling choices from the creators (those Dungeons and Dragons movies, yow!) or maybe unknown actors or just too much exposition to get people to be able to understand what's even going on in the fantasy worlds. To be fair, to make up for those misgivings, a good fantasy flick provides dozens of interesting creatures - the best of which presented in amazing quality effects - and plenty of potential beautiful sets and costumes. Will this entry fall back beyond 7th place, or will it raise up like the sun?

The Hateful Eight (2015)

May 05, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

No one to trust. Everyone to hate.

I mean, most people already know if they will enjoy watching a Tarantino flick before they watch it. He has that particular style that bleeds into near any movie he's attached to. I'd say that this is at least in some extent true with The Hateful Eight, so the question becomes more if someone wants to sit through a near three hour long Tarantino drama. Well, I can't tell you for sure if you'll like it, but I can sure report what I thought of it.

Our plot here is one part who-done it and in a way a bit like a slasher movie. You see, this is a slow burn kind of plot - heck, you don't even really get to the main setting till about 40 minutes in! We start off with a horse carriage coming across a man standing in the snowy path in front of it. He declares who his is and his desire to hitch a ride with his three (dead) bounties, and the driver informs him that it isn't his call, but the man inside. The man inside would appear to be rather a bit untrusting - which is understandable considering his live bounty inside that he'd rather not share. Still, after having the man give up his weapons to the driver, he allows him to hitch a ride. The two exchange some banter, and we learn that they are both bounty hunters looking to cash in on their respective bounties in the next town.

It isn't long until they come across another man on the road - again without horse - looking to catch a ride. This time, it's a rather known southern rebel who claims to be the next-in-line for sheriff at the town they are heading to. He is allowed to catch a ride, but not trusting him at all the original passenger decides to re-arm his first hitchhiker - whom he does know to at least some extent - before letting him do so. We get some more exchanges passing out more information about the characters pasts, until they finally arrive at the midway point - the main setting of the movie. It is here the main story unfolds, and it is here we will spend most of our time.

Suffice it to say, there are plenty of little details sprinkled about the story (felt more so like a story thanks to "Chapter" text blocks intersecting portions of the movie) that end up being returned to at a latter point when the movie finally reveals everything that happened it previously left everyone guessing on. The characters, stuck in this environment and mostly all distrusting and with little knowledge of each other play off of each other rather well and the little stop-house ends up turning into a powder keg of paranoia threatening to explode into that typical Tarantino violence.

The main setting.

The main setting.

The main portion of the "who done it" comes from just plain trying to peace together what's all going on in the first place. One character will let on accusations or observations about something, while other characters may have something seemingly unrelated going on with each other. At first, it's all just a jumble of seemingly unrelated things that are to convenient to not be more than coincidences but by the end it all ends up laying itself out in a rather believable fashion - even with some things still feeling a bit like more than coincidence. A strange thing happens between two sections, where a narrator elaborates on something that the movie was apparently too busy to show previously after not existing for the entire movie until then by backtracking into the last chapter - and promptly isn't heard of again until pretty near the final act. I do suppose it works fine, but it would have been just as easy to show it the first time and not need to spoon feed the audience that particular part - especially after already leaving all sorts of bread crumbs throughout.

Actors do a splendid job here, as one would expect. It's a good thing they do, as well, as it's pretty near the only main draw to this movie in the first place. It's a bit of an issue when your playing out a big drama like this, so I won't particularly blame the movie itself, but it really is that slowly burning line of powder leading up to a keg - and despite those tensions rising, there isn't a whole lot that actually happens as it goes on. Still, the line delivery is great, and even though parts of the world cease to feel authentic each character is at least distinguishable from the rest at a glance and listen. It feels like there was care to give each character a personality, even if you don't care in the slightest about the character and whatever length of time they spend on screen.

Costumes play well into lending each character their own feel, and the set does a good job of setting the mood as well. There were moments when the imagery and music evoked images of The Thing as I watched, and although it may not have involved aliens it still provided an ample feel of isolation to make the tension easier to build. Outside of those few particular moments, I don't recall much of the soundtrack on display here, but that isn't a terrible thing considering that most the time my focus was on the characters and the story being told.

The bulk of the cast.

The bulk of the cast.

If you don't like Tarantino's movie DNA, then I can't say that this one will particularly be breaking any molds for people. It's a decent enough story that's told well and very well acted, but one can also expect that certain level of violence and language and subject matter than is oft displayed in one of his works. The ending wasn't entirely expected - at least not in the details - but it also felt that there was a bunch of the movie that probably could have been shaved down to get it a bit away from that 3 hour run time without causing a whole lot of damage.

Return of the Living Dead II (1988)

April 28, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

If you ask people what zombies eat, most would be able to say with next to no hesitation "brains!" Of course, of those, only a few would be able to tell you just why it is that brains seem to be the main course, and those are the people who've most likely seen the Return of the Living Dead series. Still, it would be fair to say that thanks to the proliferation of things like The Walking Dead, the mainstream zombie crowd would have an answer more akin to "cannibal" or flesh instead of brains, but that doesn't work as good as a prelude to this does it? Read on to learn about when zombies started to get a bit more comical.

A Christmas Horror Story (2015)

April 21, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Originally, I would have loved to put up a review for this in the December slot, but it's unfortunate that it took me four months after that to see it. Still, this is very much a movie that falls into the category of "box art looks awesome, how bad could it be?" as far as initial draws. I mean, look at that box art and tell me this movie doesn't look rad! From the trailer, I walk away with "anthology movie" and "Shatner," and at this point I can't argue that my interest has been peaked - considering I love me some anthology films. A modest run time of an hour and a half even further sealed the deal to get me to watch it, but let's figure out if I think you should watch it.

The Rocketeer (1991)

April 14, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

There are plenty of superheros out there these days. Heck, they are all over the place, and super popular with the mainstream audiences if box office draws are anything to say about it. It's almost safe to wager that about half or more are probably even spat out by the Marvel set, which ironically is owned by Disney (as far as film studios go). Some would even say that this is when "comic movies finally started to get good," but some might forget that Disney's done superheros before. On today's sprawl, we check out one such of those movies - try not to get Elton John stuck in your head.

American Ultra (2015)

April 07, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

My original inclination was to expect a movie similar to Natural Born Killers when I thought of this movie, which only served to confuse me with the cast choices. Of course, then I watched it and realized that it's nothing like that at all. Heck, outside of a few effects on the title/credits cards, there's isn't really any crazy drug-o-vision stuff going on. If anything, this movie ended up being more akin an action-based spy flick à la True Lies with a stoner cast instead of Arnold. Sound good? My thoughts, right ahead.

Missing in Action (1984)

March 31, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Chuck Norris movie. Eighties action flick. What more can a description do to really tell you if your going to have a good time? The dude was like my first action-hero, so I'm predisposed to enjoy his movies regardless, but man has he had some pretty bad movies he's been in too. Let's figure out if this thing is something awesome or maybe just a walker.

Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery (2015)

March 24, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

What, don't look at me like that. Sometimes a grown man just feels like watching some Scooby-Doo. I admit, it is a change of pace from recent movies, but that's never a bad thing. Anyways, seems like the Scooby gang has gotten themselves mixed up in a mystery that involves a popular (at least to people old as I) rock band. Will it rock your world?

Salem's Lot (1979)

March 10, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

Over the last couple of years, I've been working my way through all the Stephen King movies. Why? I don't know, just seemed like the thing to do really. So far, although most aren't something I would necessarily call "scary" or "frightening" or even good movies at times, I can't say with a straight face that I haven't been entertained by most of them. Sure they can be a bit lengthy - even for the older ones - and some of them feel like an acid trip, but the ironic thing is the "worse" the movie (looking at you Maximum Overdrive) the more fun I seem to have with it. So, how will my resolve hold against this 1979 made for TV vampire movie?

Cub (2014)

March 03, 2016  /  Ken Rupracht

I should really start screening movies before I show them for review. I'm sure someone might take that as a negative sign that this movie isn't good - but that isn't entirely true. It just happens that once again I've picked a movie that, after a short portion of plot, becomes filled with easy to ruin surprises. Ah well, we all know the drill, we'll get through this. But will the little pack of scouts survive their camping trip? Would the name Welp have been a better choice? Stay tuned to find out I guess.
