Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

January 25, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

Amidst a slew of movie reviews that churned out the words "mediocre" and "worst ever" a little science fiction flick from a guy whose name I recognized popped out. So slathered was it in a rabble of unimpressed thoughts that I didn't manage to get it in my queue rotation until just now. I may not be expecting a return to The Fifth Element levels of fun, but I as usually expect a better movie that what has been sold to me from peers the world across - which seems fitting for a movie set in a city of a thousand planets. Grab your future pants, and lets take a jump into the mix and see what's on sale.

Baby Driver (2017)

I don't know about you, but I haven't really heard anyone go "Don't see Baby Driver, it's bad." I was actually pretty interested to see this when it was in theaters - just not enough so to spend the money and see it in theaters. Sometimes it's a bit hard to motivate yourself like that - but it got added to my rental queue as soon as possible so I could check it out. Promises of a good soundtrack and nice car-based action had the DvD spinning, but the ever-present question is if what's under the hood can back up the frame, or we are going to be left in the exhaust.

Bright (2017)

January 11, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMTcyNzk5NDg1Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTM5MDQxNDM@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Bright is another in a string of Netflix Originals that I've seen a trailer for and thought "Hey, I should check this out at some point."  Then I did. It's a pretty simple thought process on that one, no recommendation or hidden gem digging or anything of that sort, but it seems nothing these days is without some form of story behind. For whatever reason, critical acclaim this thing did not get - in fact, as far as the critics are concerned there are better Stephen King adaptations than this movie. Let's dive in to see if they bright or dim.

Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

January 04, 2018  /  Ken Rupracht

Did you know this movie existed? I know I didn't, until I was refilling my DvD queue - and then thought to myself "Oh what, they made another one of these? Well I saw the others might as well add this in." The old latex-clad killer of nocturnal creatures is back, but is it something that's worth coming back for? Yeah, we enjoyed the fresh and new take in the first movie, but surely by now it's novelty has waned enough that it couldn't possibly be fun anymore, right? Sharpen those teeth, and let's sink in to this artery to find out.

Predators (2010)

December 28, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

Next year, which at the time of writing this is just around the corner, a new Predator movie is coming out. Who knows if I'll really enjoy it when it comes out, but there is a bit of unfinished business to attend to long before it gets to that point. When it comes to the Alien and Predator franchises, I've already done them all - except tonight's flick. Can this flick redeem the poor reception of AvP: Requiem, or is it bound to be less predator and more prey?

Sleepwalkers (1992)

It came to my attention midway through this year that I'm apparently a fan of some of the worst Stephen King movies. I mean, I liked the crazed door-knocking at the Overlook and the blood-drenched prom just as everyone else did - but apparently it's widely held by ratings that a giant evil rat in the cellar or wheelchair vs werewolf are all far less of a school assignment pass than I would have graded them. As usual though, I just take it as being more capable to enjoy things for what they are - and when i found out about a movie that dealt with cat-people who hate cats, I figured this should be good for some fun. Let's find out if this movie is as much of a catastrophe as people say.

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

It's cold and snowy, so that signifies it's roughly the season of giving - as though that's something that should only happen one time of the year right? Followers of this site will already know that I'm not big on Christmas movies, but love doing side-line things that I pawn off as "holiday spirit" - like Die Hard. Well, this time around, we are gonna push our giving spirit by giving Ghost in the Shell a chance. I'm inclined to think I'll like this one - largely because it wasn't met with a whole lot of positive input from most the sources I would hear about it from which tells me chances are it'll be fun. Let's ignore out the outcries for a little bit and boot up our augments for some cybernetic fun and see if this one's the good cop or bad cop.

Monster Trucks (2016)

Nickelodeon? Well, we should be pretty well aware what we are getting into on this one already. Not saying it's gonna be bad, but I'm not saying it's gonna be good either. Their track record for me is a solid "entertained enough," which is largely all I ask of movies I watch. So grab your favorite squid-shaped friend and lets see if this movie can rev the engines, or ends up being one of those goofy trucks with tires way bigger than belong on it.

Death Sentence (2007)

November 30, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

A movie based on a novel that seems very similar to another movie that was far more low budget. Revenge movies have been a thing for a long time, and most the time I don't feel that it get's as convoluted as what I just said - usually it's pretty straight forward. The entire premise of a revenge movie is to just feed off a base emotion that we all have and can all get behind when it comes to fantasy offerings (such as movies) even if we wouldn't act upon such things in real life. Some of these things can be a little too much for the average viewer - for example I Spit on your Grave - but the more base ones leave nothing but some violence and potential language to stir the emotional uprisings. Tonight, we see if Death Sentence is a nice shiny polish on a story we've all seen before, or if it should have taken it's own title as advice.

You all stuffed? Sometimes, you eat so much you feel like bursting. In tonight's entry, we have a book so stuffed with secrets it's absolutely oozing with them. A quick, short movie to tune in to before you enter that hard-earned food coma, and hopefully your synapses are firing hard enough that you don't loose your head - it's time for Residue.

Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion (1996)

November 16, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMjE3MjQ3MTU4MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDUwMzgwMzE@._V1_UY268_CR9,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

After the last time I watched a Gamera movie, I said I really would need to come back and watch more. Well, that time is now, with an aptly named Gamera 2 - even though it's not really the second ever Gamera movie. Gamera did that similar sort of thing as Godzilla, where he goes through all those different "phases" and whatnot, and this one is the direct sequel to the last one I watched, which far as I can tell is the hard-edged teenager Gamera films. So far the turtle is doing pretty well, but can he keep his rocket-powered pace or will he need to get shelved back as "of the children"?

Christine (1983)

I'm usually entertained by Stephen King associated movies. Yes, I know the long running gag is that they are all absolutely terrible and blah blah blah, but I don't have a history of the books (in fact, I currently haven't read any of them) and I don't most the time approach a movie for more than entertainment purposes - letting me keep expectations low and enhance the chances of me enjoying what I'm watching. Heck, the top two King tagged movies I like are actually in the twenty percent or less ratings department - so obviously I'm the person you should listen to here. Either way, this is one car that'll give you pause about giving your car a personality of it's own - or maybe it'll run out of gas.

Harvey (1950)

Some people just need to brighten up. A spot of sunshine upon their day. Today's entry takes a bite from the past to serve up a sampling of humor and drama, in a way that it sometimes feel's like only an older movie can do. As to whether you'll laugh so hard you'll be seeing things or if your old invisible friend will make fun of you for watching it, only the movie will tell.

Poltergeist (2015)

October 26, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

A Reboot is a hard thing to impress with. On the one hand, you can try and just shot-for-shot the original, but at that point why bother remaking it? On the other extreme, you can make it have absolutely nothing to do with the original, alienating a good portion of the people you would bank on spending money to watch it. Really, a reboot is rarely ever a win-win situation. Still, for this final part of 3Dtober, I figure we'll put some fresh eyes on something from before reborn. Will a second viewing with an added dimension allow this to become something more, or does it simply not stand a ghost of a chance.

Coraline (2009)

Big things come in small packages for this entry in 3D-tober. Don't let it's childish looks distract you, for beneath it's charm comes a cautionary tale. The grass is always greener on the other side - but don't question the fertilizer. Be wary of what you wish for, because you might just get it. A different spin on an old concept, will it stitch us in terror, or should we leave the case buttoned up?

House of Wax (1953)

Continuing on with 3D-tober, we travel back funnily enough to a time older then the last, with a headliner more familiar to most - one Vincent Price. There's been many versions of the old wax museum horror, particularly the commonly found lack-luster 2005 take, in which the general consensus I've ever heard form watchers was "at least Paris Hilton dies in it." Surely, the third dimension will be harnessed much the same as the last movie, with it's momentarily highlighted shenanigans - although this time around the selective glasses are changed to a full companion for the duration. Let's strap in and find out if this old timer can compete, or if it needs to practice a little wax on, wax off.

The Mask (1961)

MV5BNDY1NzM2ODM0MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjQyMTY5Mw@@._V1_UY268_CR3,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

We start off with this 3D themed October month of reviews with something old. So old in fact, that not only is it older than me but it also comes from an age when 3D was used as a wonderful gimmick amongst two-colored glasses. Yes, this should be interesting, as this is a movie where in fact only three sections of it are actually in the third dimension - and I see no better way to start it off than with something out of the past to give us a good baseline. Don't mistake it for the one with Jim Carrey, tonight we watch The Mask.

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

With October right around the corner, I thought it might be a good time to get our feet wet in some more horror thriller fun. Of course, that's a little deceiving, as my slated queue for the next month cycles back and forth between serious and comedy as opposed to going full-blown tracked terror. Either way, this one actually fits a bit into both categories - it has your tense murderous super-sharks, and it has your jokey master chef L.L. Cool J. Throw on your wetsuits, it's time to play with nature.

Absolutely Anything (2015)

MV5BMjMxNTQ1NDgyOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjMxNjU0NjE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

From watching a trailer when I first found out about this movie, I got the general gist that it was going to be something along the lines of Bruce Almighty, except with aliens instead of god. I enjoyed that movie just fine, so I figured that surely something similar with both Simon Pegg and the voice of Robin Williams in it couldn't be any worse off. Besides that, it's also fun to respond to "what are you watching" with Absolutely Anything, so make sure to drink something at your own caution while the movie is in motion and find out what it's like to have supreme power.

Alien: Covenant (2017)

September 14, 2017  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BNzI5MzM3MzkxNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTkyMjI4MTI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

I was pretty excited about the predecessor of this movie coming out, and am totally open about not finding it the best movie ever. I'm pretty sure I probably enjoyed it more than a lot of other fans of the franchise out there, and largely most of my complaints were more of a breakdown of immersion from differing technologies resulting in it tying into the franchise as preposterous more so than any specific lack of certain creatures during it's runtime. All of that in tow, I passed on Covenant when it was in theaters because I did not think it would end up making me feel good about spending that ten-and-over dollar price tag for a followup to a movie I wasn't that impressed with. Instead, for tonight, we get it in the DVD queue, so partner up with your stupid scientists and marvel at the corporations continual iteration on androids despite not making them look different - this one could be an express elevator, going down.
