The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)

June 27, 2019  /  Ken Rupracht

A change of pace is what I do best - or at least, I’d like to claim that but I really tend to just get stuck in one genre for a while and dwell there. Hey, nobody is perfect - sometimes your a broken witch or a lame warlock. Sometimes your an idiot kid trying to make friends by reanimating corpses you probably shouldn’t have reanimated. The chimes are counting down, but it’s the end of the movie that will tell for better or worse: on tonight’s docket is The House with a Clock in Its Walls.

Lake Mungo (2008)

What do you do in the summer? Go to the lake! I heard of this somewhere, I don’t recall where though to be honest - most likely one of the people I watch for movie-based review and retrospective entertainment on Youtube. Regardless, I had heard of it and it struck me as something I should check out enough to place in in the queue, and the description has everything that I should dig in a spooky shoot - supernatural, mystery, and maybe even murder? Get on your drop bear repellent, it’s time we go to the land down under for tonight’s entry: Lake Mungo.

Summer of 84 (2018)

Now, the description of this movie said “hey, remember the ‘Burbs?” to which I spoke “Yes, I do.” In a typical fashion, something sounds similar to something I already know I enjoyed, so I decide might as well try that one out as well. How will it play out? Spookier? Funnier? I mean, the lead team is a bunch of kids, so it probably won’t get too serious right? Perhaps something like a mix of The ‘Burbs and The Goonies or Monster Squad? I mean, none of those would be a bad thing in my book, so I sat and I watched, and now we all get to reminisce about the good, the bad, the Summer of 84.

Tomb Raider (2018)

Never played most of the Tomb Raider games, if I’m going to be honest. I know of them, know a bunch about the character - enough that it always annoyed me when people complained about this fem-powered imaginary person being nothing more than a sex object - and even watched the older movies from it. Yeah, you know, the ones with Jolie in them? Man, did she look the part and get that nice level of sass - and for a person like me who enjoys cheesy flicks, I was more then entertained. Then came the reboot years, and I kept telling myself “you should buy that game when it goes on sale” - newsflash, I still haven’t. I did, however, get around ot watching the movie. Tonight, you find out that it was exactly this long until I realized there was an arrow in the title, let’s talk Tomb Raider.

The Foreigner (2017)

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, all I could think of was that one Arnold movie where he was a fireman and went all action hero after his daughter got blown up by a bomb. I figure I enjoyed that one enough, and now it’s got Jackie Chan in it? Probably worth a watch at some point, right? Well, the time has come where it finally arrives in the queue, so I’m about to find out all about it. Will it do things different? Will it be better or worse for it? Can the cops handle it or will The Foreigner.

Deep Blue Sea 2 (2018)

I’m looking forward to a weekend chumming it up and watching terrible shark movies. It’s a thing people do, I promise - or not, either way it is a thing I do. I thought I’d dip my feet a little and start it off early with tonight’s entry - because I hadn’t heard a thing good about it, and beyond one reviewer I watch on the old YouTube I honestly hadn’t even realized it had released before that point, so sounds like a good plan. Let’s take a movie that was fun, and questionably good or bad, remove Sam Jackson and L L Cool J, and spin a trailer that looks like we are really just going for a shot for shot budget remake, then see where it goes! Set the expectations to twenty thousand fathoms and brace for the pressure, lets see if these bull pups are super smart or this thing’s ratings belong in the Deep Blue Sea 2.

MV5BMTU3MzUzMjIxMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODY5MTIzNDM@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Here’s a movie that sounded like it could be a fun romp based on it’s description. Partially painted in favor not from a love of things Star Trek, but from the many things orbiting around the series that still end up being very entertaining watches lending it an added credibility towards favorable levels of enjoyment. It’s begging to be dramatic, but promises to not overstay itself, all while being guided by a premise that struck me interesting in the form of a little synopsis. Ready your readers or get interested, either way Please Stand By.

Mom and Dad (2017)

With mother’s day right around the corner, why not dive into a movie where the parent’s are trying to murder their kids? Horror comedy with some good old Nicolas Cage? Yeah, I’ve been waiting for this one since last week. I’ll be honest, expectations aren’t hugely high here - I expect a laugh or two be it intentional or not, and not a big old belly laugh as much as a “ha!” laugh. I expect at least one moment of a great Cage facial expression. I also expect some wacky antics. It’s not the tallest order on the planet, so let’s see if this bad boy can ante up or if it’s nothing more than a midlife crisis - tonight’s Mom and Dad.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018)

I’ll be real, there isn’t any real logic to the choice of movie this week. Originally I had some wacky Nicolas Cage movie planned, but it didn’t arrive on schedule so I had to find a replacement - and after last week was so full of lengthy movies, I though something short and hopefully sweet would do the trick. Well, it has Halloween in the title, and that means lots of candy - and candy is sweet. It’s only about an hour and a half long, so by movie standards that’s short. Boom, check it friends, now it’s just a matter of it it can retain any of the fun of it’s precursor or if it makes us feel like a dummy for watching it. Shiver and laugh, it’s time to talk about Goosebumps 2.

Aquaman (2018)

Ah, the half man who talks to fish that I have never cared about - which is honestly something I can say for a lot of superheros in all honesty. Oddly enough, this one I heard nothing but good things about - which struck me as odd, because the trailer told me this was gonna be a CG fest, and some of these good tidings were coming from people that usually crap on CG. Although rave reviews for something that one would have expected to sink like a rock are pretty impressive, the lightness of my wallet always keeps my movie-going attention in the aftermarket deals. Now that the fish is swimming in the ocean of cheaper costs, it’s about time the tide comes in for my viewership so I can find out how much I hate myself for deciding to watch a two and a half hour long superhero movie the weekend before I go and watch and even longer super hero movie. Splish splash I was watching an Aquaman.

Skyscraper (2018)

What’s that up in the sky? A bird? A plane? No, it’s a leaping Rock! Amid thoughts of “that should be fun for a movie” I opted to pass this one up in theaters - prices be what they are, and car limitations preventing me from catching things at the one remotely-local drive in. Then the reviews started coming in - a bunch of people bellyaching about how it’s not Die Hard and blah blah. Look, when I watched the trailer I had seen for this thing, I didn’t think “Oh look, it’s Die Hard remade with the Rock!” All that tells me is that I’m predisposed to find myself praising something people poo on again - but that’s what we are here for, to enjoy some cinematic joy for the duration of the ride. Keep note of all the fire escapes, it’s time we get to talking Skyscraper.

Overlord (2018)

Do you smell it? The smell of Nazi-beating, zombie blasting, tried and true old red white and blue dropping freedom onto the screen? Tonight I’m giving myself a break - you’d never know it with all the horror movies I’ve done recently, but it’s not actually my favorite genre of films. That said, we will still drop a little horror into our action entree - just to spice things up a little bit, you know? They had me at Nazi zombies, can they possibly serve up more than I want? Let’s talk Overlord.

Hereditary (2018)

Currently getting up to date with “waitstaff recommends,” tonight we get a movie that I have some trepidation about. The last time a movie in the horror genre was raved about as this mind blowing, super scary, or super screwed up movie I got Paranormal Activity - and the only fear from that was being bored to death. Still, regardless of it it means the high rankings, it’s still a matter of if it’s going to be good to watch regardless. What’s it about? Don’t know. After watching it, I know a bit more, and I have to say that at one point I had a real heavy flashback to days of the past and that might not be a great thing for the outlook on the movie. Well then, let’s carry on and dive into the old family tree and see if these genes would be better off on a short branch.

Any Bullet Will Do (2018)

Alright, western time as promised. I’ll be honest, for about five minutes I got real worried that I had misinterpreted the description of the movie and in fact got a Civil War movie and was going to be making myself a liar. Lo, the movie corrected itself and I did indeed end up with a western - a very recent one at that. Full disclosure, the western genre isn’t normally my jam - nothing against them on a personal level, but probably the genre under super heroes on the time to burnout ladder. Still, it’s been a while, and it’s about time to place one into circulation - let see if this winter tale of man hunting will leave us in the cold or surviving the wagon train. Tonight, we check out Any Bullet Will Do.

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

March 21, 2019  /  Ken Rupracht

MV5BMjExMDQ1NjMzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjkxMzMyNzM@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

I meant to have a western for tonight to mix things up, but I dropped the ball on the Netflix Disc rental round trip, so I had to last minute pick something that I’ve been putting off for a while. It intrigued me when I saw a trailer way back then, but something about it made me just keep pushing it back further and further when it came time to what I felt like watching. Perhaps it just needed to set for a while like all good art, or perhaps I just had questions about if it would hold my interest if it became too artsy. Either way, put down that brush because it’s time for the critics - tonight we check out Velvet Buzzsaw to see what it’s about.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

MV5BNDg2NjIxMDUyNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzEzNTE1NTM@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

This one comes recommended, so instead of being on the fence of whether or not to watch it, it’s on tonight’s docket. It’s not that I don’t like this type of movie - I mean, perhaps biographies made as Hollywood flicks and the inevitable entertainment inflation could be a little bit of a put off - but rather that I already know what I kind of figured the movie would go over, so despite the man behind the band I didn’t know if the interest was going to be there. Soundtrack wasn’t going to be a question - I enjoy the crap out of some Queen - just the drama. Still, a recommendation is a recommendation, so let’s find out if this movie is a drag or flying off like a rocket man. Tonight, we check out Bohemian Rhapsody.

Black Sheep (2006)

And lo, death came rolling into town, and his fleece was white as snow. First thing you think of when you hear Black Sheep is probably that Chris Farley movie, and I wouldn’t blame you. Tonight though, we are talking about a little picture out of New Zealand, who thought “we need an awesome horror movie that says New Zealand, let’s make a sheep monster movie.” With only two things on the line - killer sheep and a fun accent - I can’t see where this one would go bad. I’ll be honest though, I have to intentionally restrain myself from all the sheep puns or we’ll never make it through the review, let alone the movie! Tonight we grab our shears and hope for the best, let’s roll Black Sheep.

Graveyard Shift (1990)

I found a bundle pack of Stephen King movies, and it contained a few of the ones that I really like. I should preface further - the ones I really like are generally the bottom of the barrel of Stephen King movies - minus The Shinning with Nicholson, we can all agree that one was great. I won’t necessarily make claims that they are great from a critical stand point - largely because I watch movies for fun and not to be critical. I won’t claim that they are great adaptations - heck, I haven’t read a single King writing yet. Regardless, there’s something about a dated movie about a giant monster bat mutant living in a basement as king of the rats that just strikes my interest on all the chords. Put on your totally irrelevant hard hats that aren’t worn at all in the movie about a monster in the textile mill, it’s time for Graveyard Shift.

Deadpool 2 (2018)

Postponed due the holiday, a certain super powered person was getting impatient to be witnessed. The first came out, and it was enjoyable - much to plenty of peoples happiness, although perhaps making a character who somehow gives people an excuse to act like a butt hole so mainstream could be considered a misstep by others. This should be another case of “I see no reason why this shouldn’t be as fun as the first,” but I also can’t help but wonder if it will be able to keep up with the new and exciting considering how much of the first could be chalked up to the “newness” factor. Either way, the gun is dialed past the pop culture references, let’s see if we mere mortals can handle it or are going to end up broken like a fourth wall.

So, this movie is a spur of the moment. The day of reviewing this is Valentines Day, and although I’m sure the originally slated movie would have worked fine, it isn’t every day that movie night falls on the same day as a holiday. Of course, of all holidays this is one that I’ve got probably the least motivation to watch the main themed movies - I just don’t dig straight romance movies. The only one that would come to mind that I’d willfully re-subject myself to is in fact The Princess Bride, but that’s already been done on here - so instead, I find another movie that has some romance at it’s core, but that despite all logic I still haven’t gotten to on here. Tonight, we get to see if a big, red, spooky devil Tim Curry is all horns and no evil - tonight, we watch Legend.
