Ever wonder what Terminator would have been like if it was less serious and didn’t have a killer robot sent back with the soldier trying to save the future? Well, you probably still wouldn’t get the movie for tonight, but at the same time it’s still pretty general purpose with that. You may have expected something more weather related, but sometimes you just gotta go real oddball with it. Get out your “don’t take it too serious” pants or prepare for some pain, tonight is a tagline, a commentary, and an experience. Suck it up buttercup and get ready to save the future - oh, and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.

A man shows up in a diner, looking every bit like someone who just rummaged throught the dumpster of a science fiction movie. Tonight is the night, he claims, that the revolution starts. He comes from the future, he’s strapped with bombs, and this is lucky number 118 for his attempt to find the right combination of diners to save the world. He gets a few volunteers, runs through a bunch of reasons why some aren’t suitable to volunteer. From here on out, we get a lot of back and forth as we build out the recruits and the current actions on the quest to save the future. Of course, our mysterious mystery future man isn’t the only one who may be hiding secrets - but you’ll have to watch that to find out. Rest assured, most the questions you might have will be answered by the end.

Actors do a great job considering the absolute wild stuff that routinely happens in the movie. The entire thing is a bit satire feeling - kind of like if Starship Troopers was less about war and more about modern life and the immediate future. In turn, I could see where someone might think some of the acting is bad - but honestly it’s the point. The entire thing is a mix of people playing it straight laced while in these wild situations, and then other people who’ve already been numbed to everything acting like it’s no big deal. Kid died in a school shooting again? No problem, just go get him cloned again. Touched a kid’s phone? Now the entire school of children are out to get you. One hand you have a perfectly acceptable barely-caring salesman and on the other side of the screen you have a devastated mother who just lost her kid and learned she can have him cloned. Our lead future man also gets to really go ham throughout the movie, and nails the entertainment value.

Characters are a bit all over, rather wildly, as you might expect when I’ve previously brought up satire. A good chunk of the hero group get to have background information inserts. It’s like each (or most) person has their own episode of Black Mirror as a background, which in turn let’s each kind of get built up more as a person for you to associate with. I feel that some of it is a little diluted by the satire side on some accounts - what with it being so disconnected from reality when it hits the heavy satire part. Some characters really don’t get anything and you could argue that the more important part is the commentary of the movie then the characters, but that said it is nice that they took some time to make a bunch of the characters have more to them. You can pay attention to those moments of flashbacks too, as it takes the idea of Chekov’s gun pretty serious.

You might find that there isn’t quite as much as you would expect for effects work in a movie about time travel. Really though, it’s partially everywhere as it is with all movies these days. That said, it gets real heavy into the effects work by the end, so don’t let the seemingly mundane use of effects get to you. It’s pretty good looking stuff, especially on the costume side. I will say at times the more CG stuff isn’t necessarily believable, but I don’t really feel like that’s because the quality as much the item at hand. Most of it looks pretty good though, and it’s really only perhaps one instance where it’s really just gonna have the chance to pull you out and be like “that’s ridiculous.” It’s got some fun little action beats spread throughout all the drama as well, so it you aren’t the kind of person who cares for all the thought provoking commentary sections then you still got a few thrills along the ride.

Audio is good. Balance is well done, the line deliveries are great, even when some of the stuff coming out of people mouths can be pretty wild. The writing would probably be more of a problem than the acting and line deliveries - but again, with the whole satire styling most the time it feels very intentional. Music is there, and I feel like the main theme will probably manage to earworm itself into peoples heads. That said, I don’t remember much after the credits roll, but it’s fittingly fun, bombastic, or spooky as it goes about it’s runtime. Sound effects help fill things out and really help make the movie feel alive.

The thinking folks will have a whole party with this thing. Some folks might find it a bit preachy or maybe even hypercritical of modern times. Others will probably claim it’s too much or overblown, or maybe even completely ridiculous to think. Others will look at it’s aggressive take on technology and the modern plight of people choosing virtual worlds over real ones and becoming slaves to their phones a little more seriously. Do we live in a simulation? Is it really bad to not have free will if you are in a “better world” regardless of if it’s created by AI? Would time travel really result in actually changing things? Serious questions played out in a wacky way to help dampen some of the existential crisis you might be having. Of course, because of the whole time travel thing you do get to still have some questions as to the nature of what’s really going on and how much could be real or fabricated or what - as the very nature of time travel does have a wonderful way of screwing up everything when it comes to potential solid “true answer’ kind of paths. Admittedly, it also get’s a bit villain overblown monolog at the end as well, so despite it doing a fun job with a lot of the stuff around for the thinkers it does also still have some road bumps there.

For a movie that is equal parts wordy and bat-crack crazy, the thing is a hoot. I will say I enjoy most of the wacky and action filled sections far more then a lot of the wordy theological parts. They are good to be there, and it provides a lot of stuff to think about one way or the other, but much like the conflicts within the movie the movie itself also is a bit conflicted. It’s wild ride, but like most it has it’s ups and downs, quick and slow parts. Overall it’s fun enough i watched it twice, and part of that might play into the fact that some of it does feel like an accurate depiction of where the world could be with how we are going. Just, you know, don’t get your knickers in a twist over some of the jokes to maximize your fun (you know how some people get real upset when you point out they are always on their phone?), or perhaps use it to your advantage to get more fun out of the movie when it makes someone else watching it with you mad!
