Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013)
A film by TSUI HARK
- Wonderfully entertaining mix of Sherlock Holmes, wire-fu, and Chinese myths/magic
- Fight choreography is top notch and very kinetic
- Well done acting (even if I needed to read subtitles to understand)
- Practical elements used where they can be, not relying too heavily on CG
- Some interesting costume design for a few characters
- Some of the subtitles fly by during quicker chatting sessions, make it hard to read
- Reading of subtitles can detract from the action going on on screen at times
- Obvious-3D elements are obvious
- Not all the CG is done equally (some of it looks rather obvious opposed to others)
Opinion
I totally enjoyed this, definitely worth a watch. If you enjoy Sherlock Holmes (particularly the Downey Jr. ones) blend of action-detecting, this will be right up your alley. Fans of Chinese wire flicks should also enjoy. Can't attest to the 3D - the version I watched on Netflix didn't have the option for my device sadly. Bonus: This is a prequel of sorts to Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, so if you enjoy this there's more of it out there!
